At an early age, Paul demonstrated a keen interest in racquet sports, playing competitive junior tennis. After joining the Cricket Club at age 10, he began playing squash, which quickly became his passion. Through his early teens, he trained under and was mentored by Aziz Khan in both the hardball and softball games.
In 1981, at 18 years old, he won the World Junior Hardball Championships in an extremely strong field, and that same year he was a finalist in the Japan Open while representing Canada.
Soon after, Paul attended the University of Toronto. While there in 1985 he won the individual NCAA tournament held at West Point. In 1986 he won the Canadian Open hardball singles title and was the finalist in the U.S. Open singles at Yale.
While earning science and dentistry degrees at U of T over eight years, he competed in professional hardball singles and doubles events and enjoyed teaching squash to fellow students.
Once Paul began practicing dentistry, his squash focus shifted primarily to doubles, where he won two Ontario (1993, 1994) and four Canadian (1986, 1992, 1993, 2002) Open doubles championships.
Paul was a member of numerous Can-Am Cup teams, was elected to the Ontario Jesters in 1993, and was inducted into the Cricket Club Squash Wall of Fame in 2015.
